: Virtually zero. Terrain mesh is processed by the CPU and GPU as raw elevation coordinates, which modern hardware handles with ease.

FreeMeshX compiles over —primarily NASA's SRTM 3.0 (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) data, which provides 30-meter resolution elevation samples—and condenses it into a manageable 46 GB package. The software then converts this raw data into BGL files that FSX and P3D can read, replacing the default terrain "bricks" that would otherwise flatten distant landscapes into unconvincing tabletop surfaces.

Nine Two Productions also offers a separate package that upgrades American terrain to LOD12 (9m resolution) —four times the detail of the default USA mesh. This is currently in beta and represents a massive leap forward for simmers who primarily fly within the United States. However, the developers note that higher LOD meshes can occasionally cause "airport plateauing" issues where runways appear slightly elevated above their surrounding terrain.
After installing FreeMeshX, you may want to adjust your simulator's setting (found in Graphics/Display Settings). The default setting of "19m" or "38m" works well; setting it to "1m" will force the simulator to draw unnecessary detail that FreeMeshX does not provide, wasting resources. Leave this setting at 38m or 19m for optimal performance. This link or copies made by others cannot be deleted
Verdict FreeMeshX Global Terrain Mesh 2.0 is a worthwhile, low-cost upgrade for FSX/P3D users seeking marked improvements to terrain realism worldwide with almost no performance penalty. It’s an ideal foundation mesh to combine with ortho textures and airport/scenery enhancements for a significantly more immersive flight-sim experience.
FreeMeshX Global Terrain Mesh Scenery 2.0 represents one of the greatest contributions to the flight simulation community. , built from over 400 GB of raw NASA elevation data , bringing near-worldwide LOD10 detail to simmers who otherwise would have to spend $80–120 on commercial alternatives.
