The story begins when the three worlds are terrorized by the formidable demon, (also known as Soorapadman or Sooran). This asura, along with his powerful brothers, had become virtually invincible. The devas (gods), tormented by his tyranny, sought the help of Lord Shiva. To vanquish the demon, Lord Shiva, from his third eye of wisdom, produced six divine sparks of fire. These were carried by the god of wind, Vayu, and the god of fire, Agni, to the Ganges river and eventually to a sacred lotus pond. There, the six sparks became six beautiful babies on six lotuses. They were nursed by the six Krittika (star) maidens, who are remembered as the constellation Pleiades. Finally, Goddess Parvati embraced all six children, merging them into one glorious six-faced form, Shanmukha (one with six faces) or Arumugan (the six-faced lord).
