"You look at things like you've never seen them before," I told her one evening as we sat on the stone steps of a shrine. The cicadas were deafening, a wall of sound.

: Rather than exposing him, Tsumugi uses the discovery to get closer to Katagiri. She intentionally seduces him, dragging him into an illicit relationship despite the fact that his wife is currently pregnant.

The twist in 2004 shocked audiences: Tsumugi is not real. Not in the Sixth Sense way, but in a metaphysical sense. She is a Tsukumogami —a tool that has acquired a spirit. Specifically, she is the spirit of an unfinished tsumugi obi (sash) that Kazuki’s grandmother was weaving in 1978 when she died of a stroke. Despite its polarizing reception, the film achieved significant acclaim within the specialized Japanese film circuit. At the (often dubbed the Pink Academy Awards), Tsumugi was voted the fourth best pink film release of 2004 .
